How to Tell if a Pearl is Real or Fake – Without Damaging Methods

Want to know if your pearls are real but don’t want to do harmful tests? Here are some safe ways to identify real vs fake pearls.

Touch Test:

Gently touch the pearl. Real pearls feel cool and get warmer with wear. Fake pearls lack this temperature response.

Shape Examination:

Real pearls have subtle imperfections and variations in shape/size due to natural growth. Fake pearls often look identical.

Luster Assessment:

Real pearls showcase a depth of luster with rainbow-like overtones that shift with lighting. Fake pearls tend to look dull from all angles.

Flashlight Trick:

Shine a light through the pearl. Real pearls won’t transmit light easily due to porous nacre while fakes are transparent.

Avoid Harmful Tests:

Don’t rub pearls together, hold to flame or scrape with knives. This damages real pearls irreversibly, especially thinly nacre’d freshwater pearls.

Using the above safe methods allows identifying real vs artificial pearls without harm. Consult a gemologist for definitive certification. Share your pearl inspection tips!
